Big Walk How-To Guide
The three questions every trek group eventually shouts across a valley: how do we start this train, how do I change my color, and why will nobody carry the spare flashlight? All answered below.
🚂 How to Start the Train
You will spot rails early, running right past the starting area — empty ones. The train is locked behind the blue tower, so getting it moving is a mid-game project.
- Find the blue tower. It sits on the eastern half of the island, hidden behind the mountain if you are looking from the red tower.
- Deliver five gourd collectibles — the red gourd-shaped rewards you earn from clearing challenges — into the compartments at the top of the tower.
- Carve the key. At the base, work the key through five keyholes, following each arrow to the next carving point until you end up overlooking the tracks, a stationary red train in the distance.
- Place the key in the slot. The train lurches to life — run alongside and jump on. Riding it earns the Big Ride achievement.
Riding it like a pro
- Trains circle the island clockwise and never stop on their own.
- A lever controls speed — full ahead by default, down to a complete halt whenever you like.
- The horn at the front doubles as a long-distance signal for separated friends.
- Station schedule boards show the next trains distance and positions relative to towers you have unlocked; a copy rides on the back of the train itself.
⚠ Watch your step
There are no stations stops — you hop off wherever the rails pass something interesting. Falling off a moving train does no lasting damage, but you may drop whatever you were holding.

🎨 How to Change Your Color
Your avatar has three segments — head, torso, and legs — each wearing whatever color a friend last painted on it. You cannot paint yourself; customization is a group activity by design.
- Leave the tutorial room into the big opening field ringed with greenery.
- Enter the structure in its middle — walls lined with colored squares, a paintbrush waiting inside, and a mirror to admire the results.
- One player grabs the brush, touches it to whichever color square they want, then taps the segment of the friend being repainted.
- Rotate the brush around the group until everyone is painted nicely — or completely brown, if your friends are the vengeful sort.
💡 A second, shinier method exists
Later in the game there is another way to change color entirely, tied to the Big Makeover achievement (Get shiny). It is best discovered in the moment — just know the paintbrush is not the final word.
🎒 How Backpacks Work
Everyone starts with hands only. To haul more than one tool at once you need a backpack (back slot) or a waist bag (hip slot), both found in the wild rather than crafted.
Finding them
- Look for blue spiral-style buildings — their shared design language means extra carry slots live inside.
- Ten of these supply buildings dot the island, marked as small blue buildings on the foldable map (not to be confused with the blue tower).
- Each building holds one item for one player — a full crew splits up to claim them all. The full location rundown lives in our map guide.
- Wearing either type earns an achievement: Big Pack for a backpack, Big Help for something on your hip.
Using them without frustration
- Packs add slots for extra gear — they do not create an inventory menu.
- You cannot stow items you are currently holding, nor take off packs other people are wearing, so agree on who carries what before splitting up.
- A walkie-talkie strapped to your back or hip works one-way: you can hear it, but only a unit held in hand transmits.
- Whatever is worn or held survives everything — falls drop only hand-held items, and logged-out gear reappears in the starting-area pile.
Every Tool and What It Is For
| Tool | Why It Earns a Slot |
|---|---|
| Walkie-talkie | Talk across long distances — but only through units you are holding. Ones strapped to your back or hip stay listen-only. |
| Flashlight | Lights the night; flicking it on and off makes a crisp yes/no code for distant friends. |
| Laser pointer | Its beam reaches into the night sky — a personal flare for "I am over here." |
| Binoculars | Scout far-off landmarks and, unofficially, spy on friends mid-siesta. |
| Megaphone | Projects your voice well past normal proximity-chat range. |
| Flares | Launch a bright signal that marks your position across the island. |
| Radio | Plays music that carries — equal parts beacon and beach party. |
| Whiteboard | Draw what you cannot say; hold it up for silent puzzle hints (or pranks). |
| Cowbell | A sound you can hear, a sound your friends cannot unhear. |
| The big golden head | Yes, really. Some tools exist purely because hanging out is the point. |
FAQ
How do I get the train to work in Big Walk?
Finish the blue tower on the eastern half of the island — five gourd collectibles at the top, then carve the key through the keyhole route at its base. Place the finished key in the slot overlooking the tracks, wait for the red train to roll up, and jump aboard.
Can I change my own color?
No. The paintbrush must be held by another player, who picks a color from the swatch wall and then paints one of your three body segments with it. Your appearance is literally in your friends hands.
Why cant I put my item in my own backpack?
Backpacks add carry slots, not inventory menus. You cannot stow items you are already holding, nor remove gear worn by someone else — plan who carries what before splitting up.
Do multiple players share supply buildings?
No. Each of the ten blue buildings yields exactly one waist bag or backpack, claimable by one player. A full squad needs to visit several buildings to kit everyone out.
What happens to my stuff if I log off?
It comes back. Anything fastened to you or held in your hands reappears in a pile in the starting area next session, so dropped gear is never truly gone.
